About This Spot

Stepping into Katie O'Brien's feels like slipping into a well-worn, familiar story — one punctuated by the low hum of conversation, the occasional cheer from a cluster of TV screens, and the steady rhythm of clinking glasses. This is a neighborhood sports bar with a relaxed pace, where the comfort of a dive bar merges effortlessly with moments of genuine warmth and connection. It's the kind of place where the bartenders know your name or will learn it quickly, and where the mix of patrons—from longtime locals to those just discovering the space—adds to the quietly lively atmosphere.

The building’s unique shape and its spot on NE Sandy Boulevard give Katie O’Brien’s a distinct character that invites both casual catch-ups and game-day gatherings. While parking may be an adventure, the reward is a welcoming refuge filled with plenty of room—whether at the bar, on the sunlit patio deck, or settling into a booth with views of multiple TVs tuned to the latest sports.

Food here feels like part of the story, not just a menu to be ordered from. The staple pub fare is served with an easy authenticity, whether it’s the hearty corned beef hash breakfast that’s become a favorite or the indulgent monster wings drenched in house-made sauces. Of course, the burgers, sandwiches, and fries — classics with a few signature twists — pair perfectly with a wide selection of beers, ciders, and even a thoughtfully stirred Irish coffee that channels a cozy, lived-in vibe. It’s the kind of place where breakfast runs all day, and the day’s pace is set by the shared moments over thoughtfully prepared, unpretentious food and a cold drink.

Despite the dive bar edges—the slightly uneven seasoning or the generous helpings of pickles—there’s a comfort here that never feels forced. The pulse of the place rests in the people gathered, the steady kindness of the staff, and the way time seems to stretch just enough between plays and pours. Katie O’Brien’s isn’t polished or flashy, but it’s real, grounded, and quietly enduring—an authentic slice of Portland’s local flavor for anyone who appreciates a place with character and heart.

Awesome bartender! Great menu including sandwiches, burgers, steak, usual pub fare, plus breakfast all day! All the drinks. Pool tables, TV's, and lots of space. Patio deck seating.

One of Portland's great old divey bars in a uniquely shaped building. No parking lot, so parking is challenging at this busy intersection. Lots of beer/drink choices, good food, good service.

Food is decent for a dive bar, little excessive on the onion on the burger but they did give me a disgusting amount of pickles and i loved that. The bartenders are always so kind.

Definitely a dive bar experience but the staff is cool. Everyone is pleasant, including the patrons. Food is is basically pub, food or bar food but it still is delicious

DOWNRIGHT DAZZLING DIVE Food can be good or can be bad. This is proper for a dive bar… My food has been good and bad. The corned beef hash breakfast has been my fave and the soggy Reuben sandwich my least. Comfy seats at bar, lots of TVs, and great divey atmosphere. Try it out!
